11-10 Pioneers dominate Lorain, split doubleheader with St. Clair

On March 29, the Pioneers traveled to Lorain County Community College for a doubleheader. The first game ended with Delta coming out on top after seven innings 11-7. Ethan Lesperance was pitching the majority of the game, for five innings, before Ryan Woods was called in for two innings. Together the two gave up a total of seven runs and five hits. Lesperance earned his second win of the season while getting seven strikeouts.

Z Westley and Zach Schirmer were the standouts at the plate for Delta. Westley got three runs scored and two hits, while Schirmer got a run and three RBIs.

The Pioneers brought their A-game in the second part of the doubleheader. The final tally was 12-0 Delta, with the game being stopped after five innings. Dean Marais, Ty Robbins and Ty Jones all had two runs, while Tyler Snover, Cheyne Maier, Grant Slomkowski, Luke Schrage, Mitch Morley and James Rosebrock each had a run.

Robin VanOrden took the mound for three innings and Guy Henika took it over for two. VanOrden got his second win of the season, while each Henika and VanOrden gave up two hits, but no runs.

On April 2, the Delta team visited St. Clair Community College for a division doubleheader in Port Huron, MI. The Pioneers walked away with the first one 6-4. Justin Heinlein earned the team high two runs, and Dean Marais, Ty Robbins, Zach Schirmer and Jeff Wright each earned a single run.

Jake Ross and Guy Henika each took to the mound in the first game. Gross pitched for nearly six innings and gave up four runs. Henika took over and earning a save, only giving up one hit.

The second game of the day didn’t see such a nice outcome for the Pioneers, as they lost 5-1. Z Westley was the only scoring Pioneer of the game with only the one run. The rest of the Delta squad combined for seven hits but couldn’t produce any runs. Brady Leppek sent Westley for home plate on one of his hits, racking up an RBI.

Tyler Kirkwood pitched most of the game and faced 23 batters before letting Thomas Fortney and Kane Bourbina take over for an inning. Kirkwood gave up four hits, three runs and a single home run. He also got 11 strikeouts in the game.

The team also had a late Sunday afternoon doubleheader on April 9 in Lansing against Lansing Community College. The game was too late to be covered before publishing and editing.

On Tuesday, April 12, the Pioneers will be taking on St. Clair Community College in Port Huron. The first of two games starts at 2:00 p.m. The next day, Wednesday, April 13, the team will be in Alma to take on the Alma College JV team at 2:00 p.m. before returning home Friday, April 14. to take divisional opponent Jackson College at Delta College with a startup of 2:00 p.m.
